Sławomir Cichor

Born on 1st August 1978, Polish trumpet player Sławomir Cichor began playing in his hometown of Ruda Śląska before continuing his education at the State Secondary Music School in Katowice. Moving on to the Academy of Music in Wrocław, the talented young trumpet player was particularly inspired and influenced by his studies under Professor Igor Cecocho.

Fast forward two decades and Cichor’s career as trumpet player encompasses many activities. He’s an orchestral musician, academic teacher, soloist, chamber musician and composer. He is also known for his performances with historic instruments and is widely recognised for popularising the trumpet in Poland. During a 20-year career as an orchestral musician, Cichor has worked with the Wrocław Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Philharmonic Orchestra and the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra. In 2011 he was appointed as principal trumpet player of the Łódź Philharmonic.

A teacher for 15 years, Sławomir Cichor is associated with the Academy of Music in Łódź where he works as a professor and lecturer, conducting masterclasses and frequently acting as a jury member in prestigious national and international competitions, including the 2nd Theo Charlier Competition in Namur, 2015. He was also among the artists participating in the annual ITG conference in both 2013 and 2021.

As a solo player, Cichor is mainly associated with contemporary music, although he has also performed works by Haydn, Hummel, Handel, Vivaldi and the Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 with symphony orchestras. He has premiered many solo and chamber works for trumpet, including two concertos for trumpet and orchestra (by K. Grzeszczak and A. Banaszkiewicz) and a concerto for two trumpets and orchestra by B. Collins.

In recent years, Cichor has performed in a number of concerts and recordings with chamber music projects Monochromatic Duo (with Jose Chafer), and 4 Pipes (with Manu Mellaerts, Jose Chafer and Luc Ponet). He has released two original albums: Trumpet Song (DUX,2014) and Mononochromatic Duo (with Jose Chafer) - One to One (Akolada 2020). He has also contributed to the recording of more than 30 albums of orchestral, early and chamber music with Richard Stoelzel and Jose Chafer, among others.

Sławomir Cichor composes mainly for trumpet and trumpet ensembles, with works published by PWM Cracow and Golden River Music. Some of the records have been published (PWM Cracow) or are in the process of publishing (Golden River Music). He is also passionate evangelist for the trumpet and trumpet music through his work in organising international conferences, symposia and competitions, designed to bring the latest global trends to trumpeters and trumpet fans in Poland.

Sławomir Cichor has also contributed significantly to the development of his chosen instrument through his research into the eighteenth century trumpet, culminating in a doctoral dissertation: ‘The Trumpet in Jasna Gora Music of the 18th Century on the Background of the Contemporary Composing Traditions of the Chosen European Musical Centers’.
