NAMM show 2011 - new drums products

Yamaha are pleased to announce the release of the new Club Custom drum set at Winter Namm 2011. Underneath its retro appearance lies a completely new and exciting concept of professional drums from Yamaha.

Club Custom is constructed using 100% premium quality hand-picked Kapur wood, a material which was found after years of experience researching woods and first used in Yamaha’s flagship PHX range of drums. With a unique sound and feel, the Club Custom has a groundbreaking swirl lacquer that was designed in conjunction with the legendary Yamaha Artist Steve Jordan. This is the first time that a swirl finish has ever been done in lacquer and not via a wrap of the shell.

Percussion instruments, including drums, require vertical strength and rigidity to withstand being struck when played. The ability to withstand head vibration and pressure changes inside of the shell has a great influence on the drum’s core sound.

Kapur is truly unique because it provides both the hardness required to withstand being struck and it delivers resonance. This makes Kapur an ideal wood for drums as it produces a warm, fat, and expressive natural wood tone with rich mid-low range resonance.

The Kapur shells deliver a wide range of tuning which allows for flexibility of character in order to suit multiple situations & requirements. This is properly described as ‘musicality with tone and dynamics, above volume’.

What can be seen immediately is the very recognisable cosmetic finishes which were developed together with Steve Jordan. The new “Swirl finish ” reproduce traditional “Mod Orange” or “Black Oyster” style appearance created with paint instead of the usual wrap finish which improves the sound of the drums. This is the first time a Swirl Finish has been created with a lightweight paint that helps the shell resonate. A further two Matt finishes are also available.

Unique 15” depth bass drums provides plenty of punch and support the unique pitch of Kapur, available in 18” to 24” depth in diameter. Shallow depth toms compliment the natural tone and are available in four sizes of 8” x7, 10 x 7, 12” x 8 and 13” x 9.

The floor toms follow the PHX design in being slightly shallower than traditional sizes. The 14 x 13, 16 x 15 and 18 x 16 Floor toms fit perfectly in-between the tone of the Toms and the Body of the Bass Drums. At the centre of the drum kit is the matching 14” x 6” snare drum which is packet full of versatility.

The Toms, Floor Toms and Snare Drum are equipped with coated heads with the bass drum coming with a power stroke 3 as a batter head and features a white display head. Club Custom comes with newly designed badge with embossed logo and vintage style bass drum claws complete the stylish look.

With the finest 100% Kapur shells and it’s painted ‘Swirl’ finish the Club Custom is a new concept in drums constructed with unique materials in order to produce a completely unique sound.
